Jan Wendorf to Represent LWML at Rose Bowl Parade

ST. LOUIS, MO — Janice Wendorf, President of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, will represent the organization in the annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, on Thursday, January 1, 2009.

Wendorf will ride on The Lutheran Hour float as well as sing in the choir featured on the float, entitled “Hallelujah!” This year’s parade theme is “Hats Off to Entertainment.” The Lutheran Hour float is the only Christian float participating in the world's most famous media event. The float is made possible in part through the hard work and dedication of the Petal Pushers®, a group of more than 4,000 volunteers who decorate the Lutheran Hour float and other entries in the parade. To find out more information on the Petal Pushers® and the float, go to the Petal Pushers® Web site at www.petalpushers.org. While on the Web site, view a webcam of the float being assembled by clicking on Phoenix Decorating. The Lutheran Hour Ministries has been proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the Tournament of Roses Parade for the past 59 years.

The Lutheran Hour float is unit No. 37 and is scheduled to appear in the first half of the parade. The Tournament of Roses Parade will be aired without commercial interruption on HGTV beginning at 8 a.m. PST.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is the official women’s auxiliary of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. LWML Christmas Cards Featured in St. Louis Newspaper

Go tell it on the mountain — through the mail and everywhere — that Jesus Christ is born! The holiday season is quickly approaching, and so is the time to send glad tidings to all. The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League’s new Christmas card is the perfect way to share the joy of the Savior’s birth with friends and family both near and far.

Recently, the striking four-color card was featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which has a daily circulation of about 300,000. The newspaper highlighted the LWML card in a large display package called “’Tis Better to Give” about holiday greeting cards that benefit groups that raise money to help others.

Take the “’Tis Better to Give” challenge: Try to get your local newspaper or other media to feature the new LWML Christmas card, as well as the mission of the LWML, so that people in your community can spread the good news that Christ the Savior is born. Not only could they benefit from the cards, but they could also learn something about Lutheran Women in Mission.

Designed by LWML member Judy Newell, this beautiful card with Joy exuberantly written across the top in deep purple features a purple sky containing the star illuminating Bethlehem and the holy family below. It is printed on a glossy card stock (outside), with the interior in a matte finish for better writing personal notes and signing the card. Folded, the card measures: 5.5"x 4.25 inches. Product #16520 $6.50. Each set contains 10 cards.

Along with Christmas cheer comes a great deal: Buy two packs of cards and get one free! This special offer is available through November 30. The cards also make a great fundraising project for societies, zones and districts and are perfect for personal use as well as gift-giving. Contact the LWML Office at 1-800-252-LWML (5965) for bulk pricing.

Women from Around U.S. Gather for Leadership Training

ST. LOUIS, MO — Around 200 Lutheran Women in Mission from all over the United States will discover that “To Everything There is a Season … A Time To Lead” at a leadership training conference October 24-26, 2008, at the Crowne Plaza Airport Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. At the Assembly of Leaders event, participants will hear inspirational and informative speakers address the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League’s current primary targets and goals: Christ-Centered Living, Telling the Good News, Partnering for Diversity and Building Up Our Sisters in Christ.

Each of the LWML’s 40 districts will send new leaders to be trained at the event, which will include fellowship, singing and activities that will help participants experience the diversity within the organization. Speakers include Christian author Jane Fryar, former LWML Presidents Ida Mall and Virginia Von Seggern, LCMS World Mission representative Kristy Grannis, and LWML Committee Chairmen Melissa Salomon and Katy Gifford.

In addition to the four main sessions, each of the five departments of the LWML, made up of committees and task forces, will give presentations with leadership tips and handouts related to their areas of expertise: Human Care, Gospel Outreach, Communication, Christian Life and Servant Resources. Assembly of Leaders participants will be asked to implement a plan to share what they learn with the women of their own districts, in an effort to further develop more leaders to “Serve the Lord with Gladness” all over the nation.
